TSMC reported third-quarter revenue of NT$1,494.24 billion on October 15, up 50.9% from a year earlier. Revenue measured in US dollars rose 41.2% to US$46.72 billion. Its release puts the gross margin at 66.4% and the share of wafer revenue from 2-nanometer technology at 8%. The reporting period ended September 30. 1
In the accompanying earnings call, management attributed a 1.3-percentage-point sequential fall in gross margin primarily to the initial 2-nanometer ramp. It also said high-performance computing accounted for 68% of quarterly revenue. The transcript and release describe the same company’s performance; agreement between them is a consistency check, not independent corroboration. 2
Analysis
The business lesson is that a technology transition can support sales while putting pressure on the percentage of revenue retained after production costs. Customers adopting a newer process and a manufacturer achieving mature production economics are related developments, but they need not happen at the same speed. The margin explanation is management’s account, not a separately audited causal finding.
Readers should also keep the denominators straight. The 2-nanometer figure measures a share of wafer revenue, not a share of chips produced or factory capacity. The computing figure is a platform category, not an identified AI revenue total. Neither number alone establishes the contribution of a particular customer or application. Currency also matters when comparing the two reported growth rates.
For product teams and suppliers, these results are useful context for planning conversations, rather than proof that a specific production slot is available. Capacity allocation, qualification schedules and commercial terms still require direct confirmation. Corpslate’s interpretation is that the transition’s pace and its production economics deserve equal attention. Public aggregate results cannot settle the delivery risk of an individual product launch.
